It is our intention - To Honor

We had always planned that the first hosting of a caregiver would take place when all of the community facilities were built, and staffed. But when an opportunity to welcome Gary Franks and his mother Phyllis arose on August 14, 2007, it was an unanticipated gift.

Within the comfort of their spacious motorhome, Gary, his mother, and Gary's  dog named Dawg have lived for over two years. During that time they have toured extensively. But as Phyllis Franks' health has declined, Gary has been unable to step away for personal respite. This is often the case with family caregivers, without a personal safety net. Yet it is seldom the role of a son, and less often still, a son on his own.

His devotion to his mother, who is no longer able to communicate as she once did, speaks to a bond that transends language.

It was 2000 when Phyllis Louina Franks of Newport, California was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Realizing her ability to manage her home and affairs was declining, she shared her fears with her son, asking him, "who's going to be in charge of me?" Gary said, "I guess I am Mom".

In 2005 Gary bought their new home, the motorcoach, and left Newport.

Formerly a real estate broker, then computer software writer and technical college instructor in the same field, Gary Franks explained, "I never imagined this life for myself, but I guess I was drafted". Susan (of To Honor) said, "you are a wonderful son". Gary, who seems always to keep humor close said, "it's her fault, she was a good mom".

Because of their comfortable home on wheels, respite at To Honor meant no more than quiet conversation at a picnic table within earshot of the RV, and a lovely organic dinner for Gary as his mother rested nearby.

Having Gary and Phyllis Franks here for the night was truly an honor.

In Spring 2009 we received news that Phyllis Franks had passed away. It should come as no surprise to learn she died in her son Gary's arms.
